Our Story
Our Journey
“My grandfather always said take care of your customers, your team, and your community and your business will be successful.”
I’m an Alaskan at heart—born and raised with a rebel spirit and a love for community. As the third-generation owner and head of Alaska’s largest locally-owned bank, I’ve learned a thing or two about investing in the right people and places. My family's passion for wine and the beauty of this land brought us to Calistoga over two decades ago. We planted roots here first with Lawer Estates Winery, and now with Eight North.
Eight North is more than just a place to eat and drink: it’s a testament to our values, and a celebration of community. We wanted to create a space that’s welcoming, vibrant, and deeply connected to the place we love—where locals can feel at home, and visitors can experience the best of Calistoga under one roof. We strive to be good partners by showcasing the fantastic wines, beers, coffees and other products from across the region. We aim to draw visitors up-valley, encouraging them to explore Lincoln Avenue, stay in local hotels, and experience all that this incredible area has to offer. Join us, and let’s create lasting memories together.

Our Founders
Betsy & Sarah Lawer
Betsy and Sarah Lawer are the dynamic mother/daughter team behind Lawer Estates and Eight North. Third and fourth generation Alaskans—and longtime champions of small towns—they’re guided by the principle that helping people succeed in the community is not only the right thing to do, but is the right approach to business. They apply those core values to Eight North, and are committed to operating with integrity above all else.
Our Eight "North Stars"
At Eight North, we're committed to creating an experience that captivates our guests, uplifts our team, and supports the Calistoga community. Every decision we make is guided by our "constellation of values."
Integrity
We do what’s right because it's the right thing to do. We believe trust is built through consistency, transparency, and care.
Rebel Spirit
We’re not afraid to try out new ideas, and continuously grow and evolve.
Community-Focused
A rising tide lifts all boats. We look to invest in, sponsor, and grow with those in our community.
People First
Relationships > Transactions: Take care of your guests, your team, and your community, and your business will be successful.
Lawer Hospitality
We treat guests, team members and partners, both new and old, as family.
Adaptive Reuse
Grounded in an Alaskan ethos of resourcefulness—making the most of what you have—we prioritize sustainability and preservation.
Uncompromising Quality
Set high standards, and never settle for less than your best.
Generational Legacy
Leave things better than you found them; pass down the wisdom of those that came before you.
Sustainability at Eight North
Sustainability has long been a guiding principle for the Lawer family—both in how they care for the land and how they bring spaces to life. At Eight North, that ethos is reflected in every detail, from the preservation of original architectural elements like the antique mahogany bar and exposed trusses, to the use of salvaged materials and sustainably sourced finishes. The result is a space that honors the past while looking toward the future.
Our Partners
At Eight North, we’re proud to spotlight an incredible community of local and regional purveyors, winemakers, brewers, roasters, and artisans who help us bring the best of Calistoga to your table and glass.
